ATR Communications was established in 1993 and with almost 20 years of experience we continue to grow strong servicing the Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley.

ATR Communications set out to provide unprecedented service to our customers at affordable prices.

With our experienced team members we are able to provide 24 hour, 7 days a week support to any of our customers regardless of size. Our large fleet of vehicles and qualified technicians allows us to service multiple customers simultaneously.

ATR continues to provide, install and maintain all types of telecommunications and data networking solutions. This includes Fibre Optic and copper data cabling, MATV systems, PA systems, traditional, IP and hybrid based phone systems, cordless phone, and wireless solutions. They are also early to adopt any proven technologies as they become available.

Our major vendors include NEC, Panasonic, Molex, Krone and Clipsal. We work very closely with these vendors to ensure the best solutions are provided at the most cost effective prices.

We are certified installers of the above vendors and can ensure vendor certification and warranties up to 25 years.

Working with NEC Australia we offer support to a large number of customers in the area.


Director's message

My experience in the Telecommunications Industry is over a 45 year period.

I commenced as a Technician in Training at the PMG training centre in Tooronga in 1966. I was fortunate to be awarded my first choice location of Bairnsdale. A five year traineeship followed.

My early years in the PMG were working in the “Auto” room which originally was an “electro-mechanical” exchange. This was replaced by Ericsson “X-bar” equipment which had common control equipment with a contact switching. From the Auto Room I commenced servicing the remote exchanges in the East Gippsland region.

In 1975, now employed by Telecom, I applied and was selected to commence training to gain a “Certificate of Technology in Electronics” in Melbourne. This course was over a three year period after which I was stationed in Maffra supervising a small team of technicians responsible for the ARF (X-Bar) exchange servicing Maffra, the remote exchanges around the Maffra region and the digital radio bases at Dargo and Mt. Moornappa near Briagalong.

In 1981 I moved to Jeeralang just outside of Churchill in the Latrobe Valley and commenced working in the SECV communications section. In my time with the SECV, I gained experience with AWA Dimension CPU controlled exchanges, VF protection of Power lines, multi-channel carrier equipment on copper and via radio links, digital carrier over Fibre Optic equipment. My final position was supervisor of the VF Protection/Carrier group.

In 1989 I joined NEC and worked in a small team of technicians in Traralgon. Our focus was breaking into the Telecommunication market that Telstra were abandoning to concentrate on their carrier business. NEC was a major player in this market back then and they continue to be so today.

NEC limited their direct selling preferring to use a dealer channel and this was the commencement of ATR Communications. In 1991 ATR started selling NEC Telecommunications systems. In 1993 ATR was incorporated and established our first office which was located in my personal home.

Anthony Matley, a personal friend, commenced working for ATR in the Bairnsdale region shortly after and must be acknowledged that his early endeavours were a big part of the success of the company.

ATR’s headquarters were originally based in the Traralgon office in Argyle Street which was relocated to Bairnsdale because of other business interests in Bairnsdale.

ATR have been operating for around 20 years and in that time I have made some good decisions. My recent decision to place Ben Frew as Manager of Bairnsdale has been a great success for ATR. Ben has taken ATR to the next level introducing management tools monitoring stock, invoicing and staff movements.

ATR have been installing and maintaining telephone systems in East Gippsland region for major customers such as Bairnsdale Hospital; East Gippsland Shire Council; Departments of Primary Industries/Sustainability and Environment; Department of Human Services and Victorian Police for many years and I believe that we have the staff to continue to provide this service. ATR has a commitment to our staff to provide ongoing training to keep the company current with the latest technology so that our customers can expect to be presented with products and services that keep them competitive in their markets with stable leading edge communications.

NEC has been a major manufacturer and supplier of Telecommunications in Australia since 1975. NEC has a manufacturing plant in Melbourne which also accommodates their telecommunication engineering team. I am proud to be part of the NEC dealership network.

Job Management

All customer enquiries are immediately entered into ATR’s integrated job management system where they can easily be managed. Jobs are then scheduled to highly trained technicians in the field required. Jobs are then monitored by highly trained managers to confirm job progress and job completion. ATR’s skilled administration staff has quick access to job records for any enquiries you may have. At the completion of a job it is able to be promptly and most importantly accurately invoiced to the customer.

Vehicle Locating

All ATR vehicles are fitted with a cutting-edge GPS tracking system that allows us to offer advanced service to our customers. ATR are able to monitor live which of its skilled technicians are closest to your site for the fastest possible response time. ATR can also provide estimates of how far away technicians are so customers don’t have to wait around.
